Growing investments in Northern Finland’s industrial sector, mining projects and the green transition are driving demand for efficient logistics solutions. BB Logistics Oy is well positioned to support this development, particularly at the Port of Kemi, which serves as a gateway to Northern Finland and Sweden.
“We operate as a port operator in five Finnish ports. We handle vessel loading and unloading, storage and onward transportation – essentially all operational port activities,” explains Antti Vihavainen, Area Manager responsible for operational activities at the Port of Kemi.
Kemi is a strategically important location for the company. Its proximity to industrial investments in Northern Sweden makes it an attractive logistics hub.
“Kemi is an excellent location when looking at the entire northern region. We can provide virtually all the services our customers need, from project logistics and general cargo to bulk logistics,” adds Kim Lindström, CEO of BB Logistics Oy.
Agility as a Competitive Advantage
The company’s strength lies not only in its capacity but also in the flexibility of its operations. BB Logistics has a relatively compact organisation, but one that is highly capable and responsive.
“One of our key strengths is agility. Customers can reach us quickly, and we can solve issues without having to go through heavy processes,” Lindström says.
This is also reflected in everyday operations, where work is carried out in the evenings and at weekends when necessary.
“If a job needs to be completed, we get it done, even if the so-called official working hours have ended. This level of commitment is not something that can be taken for granted in our industry,” Lindström emphasises.
Investments and Capacity Supporting Growth
In recent years, the company has invested particularly in increasing its storage capacity. In Kemi, BB Logistics currently has approximately 16,000 square metres of its own covered storage facilities, in addition to a substantial amount of leased space.
“We have increased our capacity in line with demand, and we will build more when needed,” Vihavainen explains.
The green transition is also reflected in the company’s investments. BB Logistics has, among other things, introduced electric equipment and renewable fuels in response to customer requirements.
“We want to contribute to reducing emissions. Although electric equipment is still developing in some respects, particularly in the demanding conditions of the north, the direction of development is clear,” Vihavainen says.
The company also holds comprehensive quality, environmental and occupational health and safety certifications, supporting the systematic development of its operations.
Specialised Expertise in Challenging Projects
The company has developed particular expertise in demanding project logistics, including the handling of exceptionally large wind turbine components.
“We essentially started from scratch and quickly built up the expertise required. It requires the right equipment, careful planning and continuous development of our employees’ skills,” Lindström explains.
The outlook for BB Logistics is cautiously positive. Mining projects and cross-border projects offer growth potential, although the current market situation remains uncertain.
“We don’t rule out any customer needs. We want to be involved across a broad range of segments and offer versatile solutions,” Lindström concludes.
